Rama, I agree with all your points except one where you said the blame lies not on the people. All our problems are because of people who pray to God. Don't you get it? Yes, we will collect road tax but will not build proper roads. But you are to blame because you pray to God. Lots of money get collected in Temple Hundis but we will not renovate them Instead we will say that by putting money in Hundis you encourage corruption. What? are we making strides in IT? But that growth is not inclusive. Our object is to keep all equally undeveloped or underdeveloped.

To improve tourism in Tamil Nad and rest of India, we need
1. Clean accomadation
2.Clean surroundings around tourist sites
3. Clean toilets
4.No hassling by Guides and beggars
5. Proper roads to get you there
6.Good food, prepared well in a nice clean kitchen, which won't give you Dehi belly/Chennai belly, etc
Unfortunately, now of the above exists in India.
I love in India, although I left the country for Australia > 30 years back, for economical reasons.I make it a point to come over to India/ Chennai whenever I get a chance. My family did the pilgrimage to all the Lord Murugan temples ( Arupadai vedu) last year by car. The roads are worse than they were 30 years ago.( Where are all the improvements you always boast about India, Dad? was the question posed by my grown up daughters, born and brought up in Sydney. On one side , you see the fantastic strides India have made in IT fields, on the other side, you see the filth, dirt and poor hygeine. Try walking on the beach bare footed! The blame lies not on the people because, they have no toilets and have never been educated to use one properly. The money used to bribe them to get their votes, like fre Tv, etc, could have been used to improve their health, sanitation, etc. What is the need for a Tv in the house, when you do not have a toilet in the house? My heart bleeds when I see the neglect of our great temples, including Madurai Meenakshi temple, with the garrish painting job done in the name of reneovations. I just returned from a trip to Thailand. In spite of being a corrupt country like India, the infrastructure is world class. Travelling outside Bangok is a breeze. India have the brains, for more than any other country in the world, have the man power, but is being pulled backwards by the corrupt political system/unscruplous bastards of politicians.

Day 1. History is important. It is important to understand our culture. The money spent on researching our culture can be gained back by promoting tourism.

Day 2. Oh, wait! This should not have anything to do with religion or Hinduism. We are secular after all. So we ignore language, literature, governance etc., as a particular religion may have impacted these. This may restrict our avenues but that is fine.

Day 10. Some part of the history that we learn does not go very well with our ideologies.

Day 11. This history is wrong.

Day 12. This history may be correct but ideologies are more important than history.

Day 13. Ofcourse, our ideologies are the true ideologies because "history" says these have been followed by original indigenous people.

Day 14. Our history starts from early 1900s from the days of EVR and "dravidian" "leaders".

Day 15. Oops! We could not develop tourism based on a 100 year history.

Insider comment. It is unfortunate and ironical that our ideologies come in the way of making money the sole purpose of which they were originally framed.

At last we have some good points from Nandivarman. I totally agree that TN lags behind in promoting historical tourism. But do you know who is to blame? It is none other than DK! Majority of our historical monuments are associated with hinduism, so DK related and communist politicians shun them and do not want to promote them. Even a small country such as singapore with no historic monuments makes more moeny from tourism than we do. I once talked to Graham Hancock's research assistant who complained about how much trouble they have with ASI in order to get access to some of the monuments. We don't promote our historic monuments and don't even let others research it.
